HE'S A POET - DON'T YA KNOWIT!

See - he really is!
Yes, the bard himself would be jealous!

We did go out last night and had a wonderful evening. We had a nice dinner and then headed out to see our friends play music at another restaurant.  Even ran into friends there!  It's nice  to have a night out on the town every now and then.

MUSICAL TENACITY

Found these images back from October when Bob played out at the Canadian Honker Restaurant here in town with our friends, Kevin Kleist and Diana Parks of Twelve Strings. They ask him to play mandolin with them sometimes and if you know Bob, like most musicians, he doesn't care where or when he plays, just as long as he's playing!  That'a a good thing!

A NEW YEAR'S LETTER - BECAUSE I FAIL AT GETTING IT DONE BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Christmas 2010
New Years 2011
The Sanborn Sanctuary

Another year has gone by and now look its already January 11th, 2011 and I am just getting to the Christmas letter.  Well, that’s ok. 1/11/11 is a good number; it’s really like the first day of the year with all those one’s in it!

It was a year filled with so many things again, it’s hard to know where to start.  The family had some changes: death and moving out. The farm had some changes as usual too: death and births. And each and every one of us had some life altering experiences, as usual!

Let’s start with one of the saddest parts of the year: the death of Bob's Dad Everett.  He lived a long life, to a ripe old age of 88, and he lived his last years on one of the most beautiful places to live: our Sanctuary.  In early August this year he was diagnosed with cancer and within three weeks, he was gone.  The most peaceful way to go I think.  He was well loved and will be missed.

Bob had some changes happen too. Another eye surgery to correct the double vision he incurred from the first surgery last year.  Barn Bar continued its reign in webby-land, and we opened up our barn to have wonderful concerts out there to offer our friends and the public some good entertainment.  We had great musical guests such as: Sally Barris, Brandon Sampson, Dana Cooper, The Waymores (who we graciously provided a baby goat to sing with them for their song, “Back on the Farm”), and the Martain de’Cogain Project. The concerts have been great fun! He also continues to play with his band Blue Monk and many other musician's around town. He also took the position as president of the Rochester Arts Council. School is going well and he is started to think of that real retirement day in a few years.

Dawn finally finished school, forever.  She got her masters in human development from St Mary’s University and finished her certificate in riding and training at Rochester Community and Technical College.  She still did farmer’s market, did her equine assisted life coaching, and started back to doing more of her photography by being hired to shoot several weddings, and numerous family, children, engagement shoots and commercial work.  She also finally got back to doing the blog  (http://thesanbornsanctuary.blogspot.com/) she started seven years ago and stopped because life got too hectic. But now with no more school, and papers to write, she’s writing daily about life on the farm. If you want to keep track of the daily happenings here, check in on the blog. In the spring she was hired to teach a class at RCTC called, “Equine Therapy Concepts” for the fall semester and really enjoyed it!  It will be offered again this fall 2011.

Samantha graduated high school this year!  And two days later moved in with her boyfriend.  She’s learning lots of new things; like it takes a lot of money to live on your own, and pay for a car loan, and food.  She bought a fancy, silver Mercury Cougar this summer. She was working as a manager at Taco Bell but downsized that and went to work at T-Mobile as well, so she has two jobs now. She completed her last year in 4H, well actually all of us decided it was our last year as it was time to move on.  She showed competitively with her horses, Honor, Dex and Spice and was very successful again!

Madison turned 16 this year and got her driver’s license and a pretty, neon green Geo Tracker. She also finished home schooling and started college.  Her first semester she got three A’s and a B.  She showed her horse Max in 4H and in open shows around here very successfully too this year. She also broke to ride our little rescue horse Maui. As her birthday trip this year her mother took her to Lollapalooza in Chicago, a very large, multiple stage, concert with about 75 bands playing for three days in Grant Park.  That was a blast!  We got to see such greats as Lady Gaga and Green Day.

Kristi (Bob’s daughter), and her husband Wes and our granddaughter Riley Ann came to visit a lot or we visited them since they were living in Chicago until July. It was great to see Riley so often; they grow so fast the first year! And it was great to reconnect with Kristi and Wes.  With them living in NC, it makes it difficult to see each other often.

Life on the farm went on: we had two kiddings this year, two girls and two boys.  The girls are named Athena and Persephone, and the boys are named Hermes and Dionysus.  We sold Dionysus as a buck; he went to a wonderful home with lots of pasture to run on and lots of females to mate with. So Dawn is back to making lots of cheese, yogurt, and ice cream again.

The loss of our beloved Happy was tough.  He was hit by a car and killed this summer.  We miss him badly!  He was a free spirit and should have never been or could be contained.  That dog wondered farther and farther away and when you live fast, you die young.

We decided to eliminate the pool and put in the adult pool: the hot tub!  Well, we tried anyway, time was fleeting and we never did go get one this year.  We started on the outdoor kitchen and that ended up taking a back seat too, of course, with the death of Everett.

Also with Everett getting older, Dawn took over the garden this year, totally.  We added 8 more raised beds and a pergola to hang the tomatoes from that was Dawn’s brilliant idea to grow them upside down. Well, we should all know better and never believe a commercial; they don’t grow upside down! But in spite of the chaos around here, and not having much time to tend it properly, we did get a nice plethora of veggies from the garden. We ate the last of the ripened tomatoes in December!

Bob did plenty of restoration on the Barn Bar because of the concerts, well maybe not restoration but he did build a couple of decks on the outside of it.

Bob decided it was a good idea to feed the stray cat (and he talks about us!) that came around and set up home on the front woodpile, so her name became Woody.  Woody also is feral, so she was impossible to touch, hence the birth of 6 new kittens!  Three were given away but three remained, one Sam took with her to her apartment and two stayed here: Theodor and Oaky Doaky. That put us in the double digits for cats then. (She has since been live trapped and spayed.)

We also had a couple of chicks hatched, and a couple of ducks.  Sure enough after we ordered 7 new ducks from the hatchery!

All other animals are well: Percy and Louie are still fat and lazy, like Bassets should be, Joe the Cockatiel is still singing, the pig still is annoying, and who else? No one, I guess, we are down to just 64 or 66 animals now, like in the beginning (not sure if we have 25 or 27 chickens, they move so fast its hard to count them).

Bob and Dawn also celebrated their 10th anniversary this year!

So our year in Rochester, MN on The Sanborn Sanctuary has been another whirlwind of adventure and fun, sadness and tears, changes and fears, but overall, each day is just another day in paradise!

Happy New Year!

MARTHA STEWART WOULD BE APPALLED!

If anybody knows me, they know my least favorite thing in the whole world is cleaning. Or maybe i just know i have better things to do with my time then scrub the bathtub.  Like ride a horse, or play in the garden, or play with my camera, or be with my kids, or have a drink in the Barn Bar with my wonderful husband.  And besides, the dirt will always be there waiting for me to wipe it away, but the beautiful sweet light only lasts for about 2 hours total in a day!  I have my priorities, ya know! So i put things off, like cleaning out and organizing closets. I usually get to those in the winter when there are fewer things to do outside.  And let's face it, who wants to be indoors when its nice outside, and who wants to be outdoors when its frickin' cold???

So the inside of my house suffers from a lack of neatness and a slight layer of dust and dirt during the summer, but the barns look good. Its sparkly clean. In the winter the barn suffers from barn stank due to large quantities of poop that can't be picked up because they freeze instantaneously. So  it truly is an impossible task to clean up the barn in the winter, unless i want to stand out there all day with a shovel held up under the goats and horses butt waiting for the inevitable. So in the winter the house gets the pleasure of receiving a thorough cleansing. Or at least the closets get reorganized here and there.

So i decided to tackle one of these closets i have yesterday.  It was a large, daunting task, one met with struggle and a huge sigh as i opened the door to the mudroom hall closet and peered in.
In this picture, i had already started removing some of the contents

"Crap! That's a lot of crap," I said out loud to no one in particular because the current audience i had was a myriad of cats and of course Edy.  "Gosh, when was the last time i actually cleaned this sucker?" Still no audience reaction, not even a slight yawn.  So, i thought to myself this time and said, "Guess i better just start from the beginning."  And starting pulling everything out that was contained within.
This was almost everything that was in there

I found a bunch of cleaning items....I guess i knew i had them....

I found objects that were old....too old, like from before we even moved here.  How the heck did that happen???
See the date? It reads April, 1992!!! We moved here in 2003. Where the hell did it come from?

I also found things from years ago that brought back memories:

Madison created this doggie biscuit bakery when we first started doing farmer's market, it lasted about 2 months.

After what felt like hours, even days of back breaking labor: scrubbing, removing, throwing out things, wondering what the heck things were, I found the floor!  Then i proceeded to return the objects in a nice, orderly fashion to the shelves.  Even tucked into little Rubbermaid containers so that they had a home this time. (it really only took about 1 1/2 hours of my precious time)
Cleaned and organized

Now that that closet is completed, i won't have to even consider reorganizing or cleaning it out again until January 2012!  Yay!  I just created a whole year free of anxiety from cleaning out a closet.  Damn I'm good!

JAIL BREAK! COPS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR TALL, DARK MALE WITH A LONG FACE.

As i was still lying in bed this morning, i thought i heard a knock at the door, but perhaps because it was only 7:30 (!) in the morning or because if anyone is stupid enough to be knocking this early on MY door, i didn't answer it to save their life.  I new something was up because of course the dogs were barking insanely as they usually do when someone is on or near our driveway (that includes down the road as well).

So after about a half an hour of trying to wake myself from a long winter's nap, i arose to find a note on my front door that the neighbor had left, reading;

"Bob + Dawn,
your horses (6) are  all in our yard + woods
Ron
7:30 now"

Oh, shit!  not again!  They have more escapes from our yard in the winter it seems. Maybe it's because it is such a pain in the butt to capture them when its 30 below, i think they must do it on purpose, laughing behind our backs after we get them back in. Glad i provide such amusement for them.

So i went out to investigate the situation and sure enough, they were gone!  I looked around, thinking i could follow hoof prints in the snow, but to my dismay they must've been out for hours because the light dusting of snow we got last night or this morning had covered their tracks.  I walked around the dry lot to determine how they got out and sure enough the little buggers had lifted a gate right off its hinges and then ran amok!  Why do they do this?  I know its gotta be terribly boring with nothing to do in the winter, but really?  Do you have to find ways to destroy the property, set your self free and then cause even more friction between us and they neighbors?  Do i not treat you horses with great respect and dignity and feed your sorry butts??? Some simple returned gratitude would be nice!

So i lifted the gate back up on its hinges and locked the gate.  I trodded on over to the neighbors house through the deep snow, still looking for any signs of hoof prints, but there were none.  I knocked on their door and Ron came out to help.  Soon Nancy, his wife, peeked out the front door and said, "They're comin' out of the woods now!"  And sure enough; there they were, all running together like one big happy family returning from a sledding trip.  I had one lead rope in my hand and proceeded to wrap it around Max's neck and started leading him back.  Sometimes if you take one, others will follow, we were hoping this was the case.  And i have figured out that normally this will happen, if they are tired, but if this is the first moment of escape they will not follow, they will torment the caught culprit until he starts screaming and trying to break the fence down again.  But, as i suspected they had been out for quite awhile as my inspection to find the break out place, led me to the barn where it was clear they had been playing in there for a long time as the bales of hay were thrown everywhere and bags of grain were tossed around, a perfectly good tiki torch smashed to pieces, poop in piles. So they were a little exhausted from their party in the woods.  After all, the snow is deep out there and its hard work traipsing through it. So they all followed me and Max back into the barn very quietly, and took their place in the dry lot once more. Thank goodness it was that easy!
Tiki torch, they must hate tiki torches

The carnage

Feed bag dragged 50 feet from the barn and left for dead

There have been so many escapes like this.  Once, i  remember the terrible chase that lead nearly 3 miles, through the deep snow, in the winter of course, where they all took off at a run, mocking me as i tried desperately to run behind them in snow boots and 3 foot deep snowdrifts, all the way through the subdivision behind us.

Or the time they took off across the road into the neighbors field, again in the winter, and ended up over near the highway called 18th street. At least the neighbors over there were kind enough to help out and get them into their paddock so we could go hook up the trailer and bring them home.

There has got to be a better way!  I think we are coming close to getting the fences at their best to deter breakouts, but now with this "gate off the hinges" thing, what's next? Jumping the fence? Sending the goats to eat down the fence? Torpedoes? Weapons of mass destruction? Do i need to install a fence line made of concrete blocks and mortar? This is the last straw, busters! No more mister nice guy.
Bad guy!

I PARTIED SO HARD MY AFRO FELL OFF!

I was driving down our gravel road the other day and noticed this black blob off to the side of the road.  Maddie was in the car and i turned to her and said, "oh boy, someone hit another animal."  They drive so gosh darn fast down this gravel road sometimes, even the buses (yes, the buses that drive your children to their public school) drive 60 miles an hour! So many times our animals have been hit; we've lost several cats to this insanity.  So i was concerned and slowed down to look and see if i could recognize what animal it was.  Well low and behold, it wasn't an animal at all - it was an afro!  Yes, an afro!  And Maddie said, "I feel a blog post coming on! - 'I partied so hard my afro fell off!'"

So i pulled over, grabbed him and off we went - Adventures with Afro shall begin......

There he was, lonely and lost!

Percy said, "Yeeeeaaaah, baby!" (think deep, penetrating, Barry White voice)

Edy of course wanted to play with him.

Cheeto (the narcissistic cat) said, "He's ruining my awesomeness!"

Tiki found him quite soft and lovable.

Then 'Fro decided he wanted to watch a little TV, and settle down with his blankie.

Its a cold and long winter here in Minnesota......

8/2010 - The SIEVERS FAMILY

One of the cutest families ever - with the most darling little girls!  I had the greatest time with them and they provided me with some of the best images as of late!
